The Future of IndustrialCraft, theme-wise

Originally, it was just a small coding exercise of mine.

Then i proceeded to add the next technology, the ‘Industrialization’ to Minecraft.

Meanwhile, we got Lasers, NanoSuits, High-Tech Nuclear Reactors, Radioactive Supercreepers… Now, probably not latter one, but the remaining stuff that actually is FAR beyong “Industrial Age”.

Same way, some later ideas, like CPUs, Orbital Cannon, Fusion Generator etc are probably even less “Industrial Age” then the stuff we have yet.

First question: is there any group in the community which DISLIKES the evolvement of IndustrialCraft in this regard?
The whole Notch situation kinda bothered me into dunno’ing whether i’m still hitting the correct red line for my own mod :3

Second part: I once said this was meant to be a mining & technology-based mod, only providing useful tools and no sort of actual weapons. Kinda broke that word with implementing a NanoSabre to create a balance factor for QuantumSuit on PvP servers.
However, for some future theme ideas, for example the super-secret secret-project, I think about adding actual real weapons to the game. Not the SDK “Let’s take every CS weapon and turn it into an equivalently overpowered item”, but in a balanced, yet challenging way (and ofc with the special touch of HAYO!).

Any critic/comments in this regard? I wouldn’t mind giving IC²-users the capability to start “High-Tech-Age-Wars” on PvP servers, with each group mining sacre ressource spots with their miners, processing it in hidden refinerys and then proceeding to use the ressources in long-ranged QuantumSuit-Warrior battles. Unless you guys would actually dislike the idea ^^’

Tell me your thoughts, and feel free to be honest, please :§

I’ve got lots of MFSU full of power and not using it, so orbital stations ftw

also I would love some way of teleporting energy, so we can have a Power Hub near our spawn point and people can just “plug in” to get energy. would be nice.

  2. klopero says:

Well Al. I am playing with my friends not for industrial war but for the technological advancements. It’s like
    -Hey I’m laking of Tin
-Yeah whatever take some from me.
So i actually got no opinion about weapons, cuz I’m not a flamewar starter (hello solar haters), but I read the suggestion thread about Armor that you started. If you going to implement ARMOR with purpose of (mostly) protecting, then weapons to balance it would be nice. For PvP servers of course.
As for me… I’m waiting more for CPUs and other generators\machines than weapons.
And question: When you use your CPU to controll things it must be connected with redstone?
Well thats all my opinion hope it helped.

    • Alblaka says:

The CPU will work for itself, but offer different IO-devices. F.e. one controlling EU and another one emitting/receiving redstone.
Of course, redstone-based devices will have to be used by connecting the redstone IO with the actual device via redstone.

      • klopero says:

So if I understand right CPU will going to have something like those thingies from wireless redstone mod? Placing redstone emmiting ones near the CPU controlling ones?

  3. themuckk says:

I would say that sounds very nice, I always liked dystopian settings (Neocron, Fallout, Fallen Earth, Dystopia..). The “industrial” part of the name meant to me anyway rather something like technology than industrial because when I hear industrial I think of steam machines and huge factorys with hard working, dirty people in it ;). So I consider Industrialcraft more like a mod which moves past the “medieval” setting of minecraft.

Looking forward to more new, awesome stuff :)!

  4. Ninetailed says:

Everyone is going to have a different answer to this. That’s unavoidable when you have something as diverse and open as the Minecraft modding community. My own personal preference as to technology level, however, is actually irrelevant to my answer.

You already load block and item IDs from an external config file. Is there any reason you couldn’t extend this to disable items or categories of items altogether? This way, you could let server administrators make their own choice about what sort of feel they want their IC² server to have.

While there are some ambiguous cases, the technology IndustrialCraft² introduces can be split up neatly into three discrete “tech levels”. I propose that server administrators be given the option to choose one of these as the highest level players can reach. If they want to keep things within the bounds of modern technology, the more esoteric things like Matter, the Q-Suit and the mining laser could be forbidden. If they want a hard industrial feel, then the more modern things like solar cells and nuclear reactors could be dropped too.

This gives you the freedom to push the IC² framework to whatever limits you want without compromising the theme of industrial servers. The downside, of course, is that it’s more work than simply picking a technology level to work with.

    • Alblaka says:

I’ve thought about proding the ability to “split” IC into multiple parts. But the code is REALLY often entwined with different items, making this somewhat hard.

  5. Union says:

    War… War Never changes…

(pun aside, I still think it all fits… people are constantly going to fight over resources and tech, so there’s no reason to not include the industry of war to the industry of Minecraft…)

    • Withmyself64 says:

WAR! It exists always within the hearts of men! There is no escaping it! Plus it would be really awesome.

  6. VoraciousPuma says:

I’m glad you’re going higher tech, one of the main themes of your mod is power generation, and I want things to do with that power.
I don’t see anything wrong with adding more content to the game, PvP or not. You could start with things that both groups of players would like, force fields for instance. Useful in PvP, fun to protect your PvE base with otherwise. (I’d make them very power hungry)

    • Fear! says:

Fusion reactors, definitely. Something generating a lot of power (requiring multiple HV-transformers) to make it more powerful then nuclear reactors (6000 – 10,000 EU / t, nuclear reactor’s max. is ~6400 EU/t). Probably using a machine to convert water cells into deuterium and then a fusion reactor using a ton of energy to start (100,000 EU or something). A bit like this add-on: http://forum.industrial-craft.net/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=2392 .

CPU’s would be great, something like RedPower Computers only easier to use (to use examples, the realism of RedPower combined with the ease of ComputerCraft).

  7. FarFarAway says:

Actually I’m quite fine with they way Ic2 takes.

I agree that, there should be some kind of config file allowing server administrators, to ban/allow certain things, just as you could do with Nano Suit in Ic1. Furthermore I’d like to see CommunityMods beeing implemented. Advanced Machines, Thermometermod and so on, are almost used on every server because they do make sense and give either aquivalents to existing “original” machines, or just add functionality anyone running a nuclear reactor needs.

Just have a look on all the suggestions, requests and ic2 mods and you’ll know what people want.

And: Build/recruit a wiki team simliar to the betatesting team and try to keep the Wiki uptodate. I guess it’ll annoy many people not having the last information regarding the terraformer or any other sort of (new) block.

In any way: Keep up the good work 😉

  8. Keyalha says:

Well to be honest Weapons are nice to have but in the long run this would shift devlopment more and more to MP only cause it takes quite a good amount of dev time to balance things right for MP / PVP which is a considerable investment in terms of time. Downside of this is that everyone who plays IC SP only does not get anything out of it so you narrow down your possible audience where tech stuff is getting use in both MP and SP alike i would rather see stuff added that makes tech improves merley of that fact cause it keeps both audiences happy if done right ( which i assume it is ) in terms of tecnology i think its sorta edgy currently mainly if used together with the other big tech mods like Buildcraft , BTW and of course RP and RP2, if you go up the tech ladder you may have a lone mark but the downside is it may loose some of its synergy effects and therefore might get a bit off the track i think its a matter of doing it not too hard and make the mod become all over the place. I personally would prefer it to rebalance the mod and make the initial way to current tech more difficult cause currently you get too good too fast imho.

    • Keyalha says:

And with making things diffuclt i dont speak of make it more resource costly, but merley make more midsteps in the early and middle part of the techtree and close the current huge gap between mid and endgame tech.

  9. LordFokas says:

I would prefer if there were some sort of high power and high EU draining stationary weapons. For PvP, which implies SMP, it would be very nice. It would enable things such as setting up a base and then creating some sort of defense array (clan wars :O). But obviously that doesn’t exclude the existance of rifles (a Beam Rifle like in the Halo series, running on EU would be nice… basically some upgrade of the mining laser, but with a scope)

Computers are unnecessary, unless they are the one and only way to control and read the temperature of nuclear reactors… So you could program them to shut them off when you have too much energy stored or when they are too hot, and starting them again when power and heat are both low. That way you can build a Mark-V reactor and go take a piss without having the reactor cease existence violently. Another cool thing too it would be the ability to refill reactors automatically. (Am I sugesting too much?)

Anyways, so far you invented a use for the useless (with the Recycler), transformed the excess of coal into lack of coal (Diamonds ^^ ), and between other things, made the game harder and more challenging. So, I trust your gut. Do as you will. So far it has been great.

I like the industrialism (who would have guessed that, huh?) so as long as IndustrialCraft feels Industrial enough, I’ll be there.

    • Stuart says:

This is a good sentiment Also, I’ve always thought of the “Industrial” in IndustrialCraft didn’t mean industrial age, but the difference between an amateur mining operation and an industrial mining operation; not just looking for deposits near the surface, but large-scale digging up of the Earth to get the resources you want and then mass-processing them into huge amounts of raw materials.

  10. Withmyself64 says:

I think you are going in a fine direction, as long as you don’t let Albos take over the world with his robot army ;D (yes I’m still on that idea.) Also I think that weapons are fine but they are not really necessary because everything is contained within your house and killing things is not important. If there were reasons to go outside your house that would be great because there should be some things that are not automated. And there needs to be more point to the mod, once you have a full quantum suit, you don’t really have anything else to do but people still make tons of UU-Matter for reasons I can’t understand, once you are invincible why do you need to make diamonds?

    • LordFokas says:

That just made something pop in my mind!

      Remeber the Zeppelin Mod?
well, if you use it on IC items it will pretty much make minecraft crash.
But, if you were able to assemble a mobile base, there were reasons to explore the world, and fight over resources. Of course in this case a moving base would consume a ridiculous amount of energy (but that should be balanced in terms of drain / benefits). That also makes me think of a base with armor and weapons (made of iridium perhaps?)

A bigger base would be more costly to move around and to protect, but more space would allow for more stuff inside.

I mean, i’m kind of tired of staying in the same place an entire life, wiring machines. But having a mobile one… that would be off the hook!

      • Withmyself64 says:

Yeah once the zeppelin mod comes out of beta and could support larger crafts, although it can have pretty nice sized bases, things will be awesome! But if they could make it so that aircrafts were more realistic and solid flying bases would be great!

  11. Maeyanie says:

I personally think that sounds great, but if you’re worried about “feature creep” overtaking IC2, you could always split it into several optional modules by functionality.
Then people can use what they want, and leave out what they don’t. Though I suspect most of us will still use everything. 🙂

  12. DDBlaze says:

I like the idea of weapons. But I agree that it would be great to implement weapons which run on EUs because that would keep up the IC2 style. Except maybe something BIG like the H-Bomb. If it would be as powerful as xx or xxx nukes but VERY EXPENSIVE (like one part costs as much as the whole Quantum Suit). But that’s just an idea because it might cause griefing problems :b.

I also think that computers would make more sense if you could use them to control the machines you connect to them, like the energy flow in them, whether they are on- or offline. Maybe even controlling the defensive system (if you would implement something like turrets, lasers like in the laser mod or even the existing tesla coils).

I also just thought of a machine you could perhaps implement which would “recycle” the item you put in into its original components.

These are just some things I personally would have liked in IC2 but I leave it up to you because so far you have not managed to disappoint me 🙂

    Awesome mod keep it up!

  13. Altaree says:

Config options for this type of thing would be great. You could always take the “official addons” route and have this functionality delivered in separate jar files.

  14. Eric says:

Really depends on how you do it, If you intend to add guns it might be nice to add lead as a resource, it could be used in batteries and bullets. Also remember that you have copper already in the game for bullet casings. Iron shouldn’t be used in any ammunition it’s far too important.

    • Alblaka says:

Great point, i will make Copper the main ressource for any sort of ammunition, if i implement it.

      • Stuart says:

And clearly the propellant would be gunpowder, but would the scale of war require a non-creeper source of gunpowder? Maybe some recipe (or new ore type) that would be used to make gunpowder?

        • Rgamer says:

I think the seeecret recipe for gunpowder still exists. Haven’t had a reason to test it, as I’m constantly consuming the required ingredients.

      • Mazoo says:

Don’t forget depleted uranium shells! You already have the DU from the nuclear reactor.

  15. Webmilio says:

That is a great idea, but you should still add some not-aggressive things, such as for example a kinda little “cellphone” that can be used when in problematic situations, lets say your friend doesn’t have a full energy bar and has half a heart left and is surrounded by like… I don’t know let’s say 5 creepers. He as NO chance of surviving, so he can use his little cellphone that is linked to a computer and/or little friend’s cellphone, sending a signal for help. Then, the little cellphone would like guide you to the other cellphone.

I still think that you should add CPU’s and stuff before anything else. We could do such great things with them and I had an idea, which follows: if you do know what The End dimension looks like, then just imagine some of the towers but in the over-world and made out of machine/iron blocks. In each of ’em is like a transmitter, all the transmitters linked to the main Computer. So each player can as his console, receiving signal from one of the towers. We can also place storage units or processing units in these towers.

Anyway, continue with these great ideas and contrarily to your opinion about Minecraft, your mod is evolving in the right way, always adding awesome features.

    • Rgamer says:

Consoles that can be separated from the main body of the CPUs would be lovely, so I could have my console in my base over here, and the CPU in that mountain over next to my base.

  16. GrandKaiser says:

I will poke my head in again, Alblaka.

In my server, we utilize industrialcraft not for pvp, but for the enjoyment of industrialization, we compete for the “Biggest” complex. Gathering and amassing materials and trying to outdo eachother. One issue we often run into is stealing and/or base defense. Weapons do not seem like the “proper” way to industrially kill someone. However, defensive weapons are perfect. (Tesla coils anyone?). What I would like to see would be some kind of sentry gun (programmable by the computer), laser-tripwires that emits redstone (Yes I know it belongs to RP to do something like this… but Eloraam is in her own world and would NEVER listen to a mere “mortal”). A camera could be neat, but I don’t know how hard/impossible it would be. (I am going with “impossible”). Electrified flooring, robot sentries with respective charging stations, etc. You get the idea.

When I first read about the computer, I got rather grumpy. Thought “what a waste of time!” But the more I thought about it, the more I realized, “Huh, this could be useful.” What is important is that Redbus and Albos don’t fight/compete. I understand that Redbus is kids-in-the-sandbox corporate theft, but they could potentially each do something useful. Let Redbus be a mid-tech computer, hell, even let EU’s power the damn thing. But when people need more than just a gimmicky redstone operator, they switch to the more demanding “Albos.” With Albos, let it control redstone, but also let it read temperatures out of the reactor, give it a wireless block (linked up by the freq trans), that when it has things above/next to it, it sends out information (can also be obfuscated). Example: Put a pressure plate on it, when someone steps on it, it will give the weight in items/armors (calculating for you if you have enough EU’s for the teleporter, or maybe not letting people out with stolen stuff, like they have to weigh the same going in and out of your place) If it is next to a laser, let it tell with its tripped or not, you could make the laser do damage when the computer tells it to. Make the button work as a “fingerprint scanner”it gives the computer information as “who” pushed it OR “Admin vs. User vs. Not registered” pushed it. (again, Don’t make a competitive system to Redbus, make it an upgrade.

Truly Alblaka, adding weapons and spending time balancing them will take away from what Industrialcraft is about. I can speak for my servermembers (We are conferencing in skype right now) that weapons and armors are a waste of time. If we were looking for that stuff, we would grab a different mod. Other people have done pvp mods really well. Leave that to them, and do what you do best. Don’t become Eloraam with the “If I could JUST squeeze in ONE more of someone elses mod!”

    • Webmilio says:

I agree, finally. I still believe what I said in my post, but I could remove the weapon part. GrandKaiser is right. Don’t waste time on that. If you don’t beliebe me/us/GrandKaiser/whoever agrees with this, then just make a little Pool vote with two/three simple questions and a simple title:

“What would you like the most to be in the next update?” and the questions would be:
      1: The CPU’s stuff, Kernels, etc. (Techno Stuff);
      2: Weapons, armors, etc. (PvP Stuff);
3 could be “I don’t really care, I just want something new.”, “None of the above”, “A extra-terrestrial ship that sucks in everything” or “I’M TIRED OF THOSE UPDATES”.

That could actually make more than three questions, but whatever. Soooo yeah! I know I might be contradictory with my previous post, but o well.
You can also see that most of IndustrialCraft is about machinery and/or technology that is of the futur (such as teleporters that doesn’t exist in real life, if you didn’t knew xD).

Now this part is for GrandKaiser.
There WAS already a mod (I think it still exists, but its not updated (I think)) that added operational cameras. So yes, it is possible, but I would think it would be really hard.

And could you PLEASE link me to the post where she actually talks about RedBus or something, cause I’ve never seen that type of information.

    • Alblaka says:

      I see, that’s a valid point.
And don’t worry, Albos is currently priority (after current bugfixes). The new secret project will as well add new “peaceful” stuff to IC (and actually a REAAALLY epic amount of something IC lacked so far), but could as well be enhanced with weapon systems to create a more PvP varied Industrial theme.

But that’s still some time up ahead, first things first :3

    • Pacres says:

The idea of a pressure plate next to a CPU that would Output in text; the total cost of energy it would take to teleport you, would be absolutely amazing. It can be frustrating when you’re calculating how much energy you’ll need over time to go back and forth between teleporters. I also agree with the idea of more defense based machines like turrets that take ammunition and EU to be able to work.

The best idea you’ve given, in my opinion, is the idea to make Albos a step up from Redbus and not a competitor. If you could make it an upgrade, I’m sure more people would be inclined to use her’s mid tech, and yours late tech.

  17. nerfnerf122 says:

I like the idea of cellphones (like Webmilio said) and cpus, the server Im running is just a fun way to build creation and show them off, not warfare. Cpus could be used as smaller version of the BIGGGGGGGG limited task redstone one.

  18. GrandKaiser says:

    http://www.eloraam.com/?tag=redbus

Protip: Redbus was announced about a week after Albos. Coincidence much?

    • Webmilio says:

Let’s not start that discussion again (it was already kinda debated). If you asked for an opinion though, I would think that Eloraam already had the idea, but wasnt quite sure. Seeing Alblaka do it, she might have been like “O well he’s doing so let’s do it too!”.

And thanks for the link. I didn’t see things such as “Fingerprint scanners” (cause you said “Don’t ‘copy it’, Upgrade it”).

      • Alblaka says:

Yes, Eloraam and me both had designs and plans for seperate CPUs before either of us announced them ^^
No issue there, exspecially since both CPUs base on entirely different concepts.

    • necans says:

Tubes and blutricity were “invented” months after BC and IC.Care much? No.As long as you don’t copy the code, youre free to implement your own versions of certain things other mods have too.Thats the whole point of Elooram expanding Redpower afterall.

      • nerfnerf122 says:

That is true, but I assume it was VERY hard to code, that’s why she (or he) didn’t do it. As to my knowledge if you make a CPU you would need RAM and much more things that I dont remember.
If the code for Redbus was free and Alblaka wanted to make a CPU he would do it.

  19. Scors says:

Personally, I’d say go for everything you’d want to add. The PvP stuff may be designated that, but it could always be used against mobs and evil things that go bump in the night (like pistons). I find that Industrial Craft is most definitely going in a positive, and effective, direction! (Though, I think at this rate of growth, we’ll need more Block ID’s to handle all the greats together. i.e. Industrial Craft, Buildcraft, Better Than Wolves, RedPower, etc.)

    • Alblaka says:

The whole weapons and secret stuff ideas will consume exactly zero block IDs.
Item IDs are “limited” to 32000 with up to 32000 possible varying items per ID… kinda limitless.

      • Scors says:

I was referring more to the inevitable addition of new machines, which would (is) going to be awesome. 🙂

  20. imer says:

    Combustable Lemons
    HAYO!

  21. Ez says:

As far as the mod moving away from the only useful tools side of things the only problem I have is that enhanced weapons and armour make the PvE challenge of minecraft worthless…on the other hand it was very worthless to begin with so that’s Notch’s fault 🙂
Most dangerous thing in MC is lava under a suspended gravel floor…oh look! Some iron AHHHHHHHHHH IT BURNS.
Anyway…A mod that makes war possible and enjoyable in with industrialcraft would be excellent but would need some changes to MC such as:
    Less common ore in general
    Harder to attain food
Valuable positions, whether they be concentrations of certain ores, salvageable scrap piles, meteor impacts, animal breeding grounds, abandoned bases (chance of blueprints if they get in), neutral robot base etc
This would be so people pretty much have to step on eachother’s toes and cannot gain an advantage through sitting underground forever with a drill. That’s some of my view on it anyway. Basically the problems with Mortal online and Xsyon MMOs, no need for resource means no need to fight.

    • LordFokas says:

In that case, I believe scarce but big enough mineral veins over the world’s surface would be excellent. You would need to find one, setup you machines, and secure the area… no easy task, and lots of fighting.

      • Rgamer says:

Would you say the vein size present in Vech’s Super Hostile Legendary of Coal in Floating Shards is good?

        • LordFokas says:

I dont think so… that is more of a spike rather than the veins I had in mind. It’s not bad, and has a good size (bigger = rarer, so we can have a wide set of them).

The thing is, you put a couple of miners on it, go grab something to eat, and 2 minutes later when you’re back, it has been totally mined. Can’t be that way.

It has to take a long time to collect, and / or force you to occupy a big area… But also has to be worth it.

The reason is, you may not be able to dash in, pick it up, and dash out… You have to stay there for a while so that you may be found, in order for the conflict of interests to breed some warfare. Got it?

Maybe it was better if they were generated by fallen meteorites, that way, after you clean an area, they may show up again, and a meteorite falling doesn’t go unnoticed…

Also it would allow for a special machine that was the only way to extract resources from meteorites… Given enough time and EU, it would slowly extract gems and / or dusts.

Now that I’m on it, you could have some sort of Uranium Meteorite, that carried a huge ammount of it (kinda like quarrying a few chunks). The downside of an Uranium Meteorite: Standing around would wear out your armor, and then your life. Since it would be a nuclear energy generation miracle, it needed something to balance it… there you have it.

          What do you think?

          • Ez says:

Can go one of afew ways:

1.Make it take more time to mine. Perhaps the rock between small veins is a fair bit more solid that average rock…then again still like paper to a mining drill so probably a dull idea.

2.Make each block of ore drop less than 1 ore. I don’t mean a drop chance I mean a different item that you need perhaps 9 of to make a full item.

3.Make resources per side like an RTS and have captured miners that give resource at certain rates. Tho this kind of goes in the wrong direction in my mind.

4.Make small amounts of ore that respawn after so long. Obvious issues with people being stood in the wrong place or placing blocks where the ores would be ETC

            5.Hopefully think of a better idea 😀

    • Alblaka says:

I would definitely consider implementing an advanced ore generator for SMP, creating maps with varying ore density (creating areas with up to 10% ore degree, kinda the stuff you will fight about).

  22. HalfThere says:

You’re gonna need to step the weapons up a bit. And then some more.

These enchanted swords and (planned) enchanted bows pack a lot of punch as is.

  23. Brick says:

PvP in Minecraft has a serious problem : lag. Even on the best servers with the fastest CPU available and a perfect net connection, the game is not very smooth in terms of tracking the movements of other players. IC2 doesn’t help matters, since many of the IC2 machines create additional lag of their own.

Thus, hitting anyone else with a weapon is an exercise in frustration. The fix is to make the majority of the weapons be automatic, controlled by the computer and server side. Think gun turrets and killer robots. That way, since the server knows where all players are at all times, it will be able to chase them down with automated weapons.

The PvP I want to see is more a technical challenge : with the help of energy shields/killer robots/sentry guns as well as the existing Tesla coils and high voltage cable, try to create a fortress to live in that is impenetrable, even when you are offline.

  24. Brick says:

The other team, “team griefer”, tries to break into your fortress and steal your stuff.

  25. Aven says:

Weapons would be nice in SMP but I would also like to see some industrialisation of the agriculture, since it is still the same as in normal minecraft. I mean we have teleporters and quantum suits, but are still working with a hoe in the fields … it just feels wrong.
I could easily imagine electric hoes (or something more sophisticated), some kind of artficial fertilizer and industrial processed food. And with higher technology you could create genetically altered crops and trees, which would grow faster and/or could be processed into special stuff/substitutes for something.

  26. Mensrea says:

I will love you forever if you give us some fanciful weapons to fight with. I have been quietly waiting and hoping for IC weapons since its release and ecspecially since I realized its potential to make one hell of a war game. I dont even see more then 2-3 weapons as being necessary. No one needs 20 different guns when they all essentially do the same thing. Users are forced to use crappy ww2 guns, non-existant SDK guns (crappy CS ripoff like you said) and horribly bugged MMW (almost a complete failure). Thus, I welcome a dedicated, talented modder such as yourself into the realm of PVP gaming with open arms. Well, begging arms to be specific.

My idea would have been 3 overall calibers with abotu 3 weapons for each caliber.
9 weapons total, each with it’s unique abilities.

And ofc a varying set of ammo either gun can use :§ Customization wins.

      • Rgamer says:

Is there “hot” lead (explosive ammunition, for those of you who are not familiar with ) available for any of the calibers? Because I want to be able to give them creepers a taste of their own medicine. Admittedly, increasing the amount of elemental lead and cadmium in their diets works too 🙂

  27. KelDG says:

I don’t really care for the weapons, IC2 to me is the industrial side, the machines and tools. Like other have said, if I want a PvP gun mod I will go and find one. To me the machines and tools are the spirit of this mod and what drew me to it. FYI I have not even crafted a nano-sabre.

This mod is awesome as it is and personally I would like it to concentrate on machines and tools.

  28. Mensrea says:

Also, just adding weapons would probably suffice – no need to burden yourself with all these other things. Maybe an option to disable ore generation. I find that with a little creativity and the right tools the burden of having to do absolutely everything can be lifted off the modders shoulders and given to users instead. If you want ores to be scarce = turn off ore generation and add ores yourself with MCedit. To extrapolate on what I was saying about weapons, really all you need is three:

1.Basic gun which uses low tech resources and low tech ammunition – good for fighting people armed with vanilla weapons and armor. Probably a conventional firearm.

2.Moderately advanced gun which requires some more expensive materials but which is useful against nano armor and of course vanilla armors – maybe the laser could be upgraded for combat purposes?

    3. High tech weapon that can deal serious damage to quantum armored foes but which uses energy and maybe even UU matter for projectiles – nanite rifle? Disolves armor and materials on a molecular level? Either way the difficulty of making this weapon and using it should be on par with the difficulty of making quantum armor.

And I dont really understand the gun-modder communities fascination with graphics and projectiles. Isnt there a way to just point-click-do damage without the unnecessary projectile animations and calculations? Lasers are, after all, as fast as light and invisible. And unless your firing high grain rounds at low velocities you will never even see a bullet from a modern firearm.

To be honest though I have found that the IC system is already perfectly suited to economic competition (no balancing needed – if one side can do it so can the others). And you have jetpacks and super fast running, which takes care of mobility. You even have super soldier armor. Really the only thing seperating this mod and some revolutionary FPS-RTS is weapons. Maybe a turret would be helpful – and even that only to help keep things organic. After all getting shot down by a nuclear powered gamma ray 200 blocks from the enemy base would be preferable to running into an invisible wall that some admin set up.

    • Rgamer says:

Unfortunately, Minecraft’s projectile system is not Hitscan, which would require coding an entire new projectile system.

      • Alblaka says:

And it will stay projectile-based ^^

The only problem is there’s a strict limit for max-speed, namely “1F”. Anything past this speed can cause projectiles to skip through blocks, an issue I had with the Mining Laser…

        • Ez says:

Could you make them fire non-moving, long thin projectiles? Then again I don’t know how that would work with things in a line. Possibly have many smaller pieces of a line each creating the next as they destroy themselves.
          Again no clue 😀

  29. Wolfie says:

I love the mod as is and what it can be. I would like to see more automation and sci-fi type items (force shield generator, etc). I would ask that any PVP-only items be placed in a separate file or can be disabled in a config file.

  30. mattkab2 says:

Please do this, the idea of having an epic war between my friends, with these types of weapons, sounds amazing. I tried to code something similar to this, with long range lasers, etc., but gave up

  31. Fritter55 says:

First off, plesae understand I love IC2 and probably would have quit Minecraft by now if I had not found it. I am excited for future features that have been talked about on the blog and forums, but I really think theres quite a bit of work that could be done to the existing mod.
It has always seemed to me that tier 1 is the only really integrated tier. You get basic processing machines, a vareity of generators, tools and portability options. However, once you move into tier 2 you really need to get the advanced machines mod for tier 2 to make sense 🙁 the armor is good and the mining lazer would be awesome but there is no portable tier 2 power supply to run it off. Now I’m starting to get chaind to my base.
Moving into tier 3 I now have lots of power storage (still stuck at my base) but my tools are still tier 1 & 2, and thre’s sill no portable power usage, unless I want to spend a long time moving too many lapotron crystals around to too many widly spaced MFSU’s, Im still locked down, and i dont want to stay home and babysit any reactors so i kind of have to build many solar panels or geo’s.
Now like I said, I love IC2 and i wouldnt wat to play MC without it, and imreally excited to see what can be done whth CPU’s and whatnot but i still just wish for more general balance inside the existing tiers. Like a variety of tier 2 & 3 generators, tier 3 machines and tools, and portable power/chargers that work in the field.
I love the mod but I dont wanna be stuck in my hole. I want to go out and play!

  32. maximumsum says:

PLANES PLANES PLANES pls or some sort of contrapion that allows us to make like moving miners xD

  33. Hermasetas says:

Well in my opinion weapons are kinda pointless (fun though) because of the way minecraft works. You die – respawn – pick up your stuff.. There is really no purpose of killing each other.. Except for the fun part xD

But I don’t play much multiplayer, so I would like more machines etc.. More stuff that makes me feel like a mad scientist 😀

    • Stuart says:

I agree with the mad scientist sentiment. Part of the fun is setting up a mad scientist laboratory with high-tech stuff inside. Also, I’ve always wanted a machine I could load with some sort of power source and would slowly tunnel 1×2, 2×2, or 3,3 tunnels. Say you could tell it to go ‘x’ blocks before stopping. For balance issues, it would probably be slower than doing it yourself, but the bonus would be that you don’t have to wait around.

  34. Funonly says:

    Hi alblaka,

I’m actually not a posting type. I’m actually that guy some of you sort a know because I have a minecraft server witch is 24/7 online and has awesome mods. 😀

    But about your idea(s);

    1. The futuristic part i really love!!! i went like ZOMFG and came back down to earth. So i like it, but as long as it is in this sort of tier form (or what ever you like to call it) so it needs to take a hell of a long time to manufacture any of that second tier (dunno flight age? space age D: )

    2. I really dont care for wapons once i played with nukes but got bored after 16 seconds and twice played with the mining laser but was to unpractical for me(I always end up shooting things I didn’t want to shoot -.-‘ ).

so really like the first one….like really really !!!

    one of your no-life fans

    • Stuart says:

I’ve started using nukes as a utility item, haha. At first I wanted to know what the blast radius was, so I dug a hole down into the ground and set one off. Turns out I set one off into a mining tunnel complex. After that, I set up a base in the side of the big underground hollowed-out sphere. Now when I need an underground chasm for a base or whatever, I set it up in a nuke hole. I guess the best part is that it might be a bonus if added features have multiple uses (maybe even unintended, haha)

  35. Beer says:

Personally, I’m not big on the weapons thing. No real point to it considering bows and swords pretty much take care of anything save dragons and what not. What I would like to see is something similar to the CCTV mod incorporated into industrialcraft. Would be nice to have a central room that contains view screens of any machine I’ve got going on.

Other than that, I really enjoy the challenges this mod brings to the table as it is. I haven’t played it in awhile though. Waiting for the 1.0.0 release. So, eagerly anticipating that. 🙂

  36. NetherTrey says:

Love the idea of future tech, not so keen on the pvp/armor/weapon stuff. At its heart MC is a building game. While being able to take a pot shot at your friend when he’s standing on the side of a cliff can be fun and quite amusing, minecraft isn’t optimized for serious pvp, and personally I don’t see any hope for it in that area. But, that said, I can see how its appealing to people, and I’m sure a lot of IC fan’s would love it. With Q-suit and nano sabre, you feel practically like a jedi. If its something your excited about, and people want it, have at it (just please don’t waste too much dev time on it) 🙂

  37. Hey Alblaka,
As honest as I can be, I have found Industrial Craft to have completely changed from when I first started using it, and losing the feel of “Industrial Craft.” I found this mod I believe when it was in Beta 1.3 and feel in the love with the mod. From the batteries to the new ores, this was a mod that hit the spot for me. It was one of the first mods that I got into, and with over 40+ items at that time it was great. Now through the updates, there were fixes to add a whole new feature with the cables, which was added when I first started. That, like redstone, completely changed the mod. Now we weren’t getting battery after battery, but were able to power all our items at once, and with a breeze. But, as more updates came out, I found myself having the need to spawn myself items. How was I supposed to make the new nano suit recipe without digging for 6 hours to find all the coal just to turn it into dust, then compress it, and go thru a bunch of different builds and such. Now I didn’t have a problem with that, but it felt like the mod was straying away from what it first intended to be. It wasn’t that going and collecting urine (as i like to call it), copper, and tin were the focus anymore, but sitting there for days letting your solar flowers, generators, and windmills collect power. And after a while it got so repetitive. I would collect energy to make more energy is how I looked at it. I was also now seeing not only energy crystals, but Lapotron Crystals, which held sooo much power I thought I could never actually get one of those full legitimately. The teleporters, as cool as they are, required so much energy for such a useless feature. What I mean by that is if I’m already spawning myself these crystals, I could just as easily install Zombes Fly Mod. I guess what I’m trying to get at here is that rather than Industrial Craft, I’m playing more of a “Futuristic Craft.” Don’t get me wrong Alblaka, I love your work that you have done, and have always been a loyal fan of IC. I appreciate the fact that you are the sole reason my youtube channel is popular. I remember joining the SMP servers with you. I remember the first day I messaged you on the forums and you featured my video on the page. Thank you for the amount of work and effort you have put into IC, and I will honestly still play it no matter which direction it goes. Thanks 🙂

    • BrickedKeyboard says:

It is a time consuming process, but it is possible to get everything legitimately. It takes skillful play as much as it takes time : with clever play you can build up and get things 10x faster than if you design poorly.

      • Stuart says:

This exactly. Part of the fun is setting up an efficient system. Rough those solar panels in, get the power flowing. Get rubber and insulate the MV wires as you go, netting you less loss. High-tier technologies are balanced well, in my opinion. It shouldn’t be easy to get a lapotron crystal or MFSU and you should feel an accomplishment when you finally make one. After you have a good set-up, you’ll be looking for things to ‘waste’ your energy on. When the 4-5 MFSUs start nearing the 10 million mark each, it’s time to tun on the matter generator and ‘waste’ that energy

        • Rgamer says:

Also, a nuclear powerplant. Once you have on going… welll… you aren’t gonna have any problems with power production, let’s put it that way.

  38. thorbo says:

I would like to see the mod move in a more futuristic direction. To me the fun in industrialcraft is creating all the infrastructure to make solar panels as fast as possible so I can get as many eu/t as possible.

For me the fun ends as soon as I have more eus being produced than I can even use. There is no real use for all the eus when you have enough to produce matter fast enough that you can make unlimited of everything.

I’ll go over the heavy users quick we have available now:

    1. Mass fab. This is great, but eventually it just makes more stuff you don’t really need or it gets boring making the same stuff over and over.

    2. Teleporter. The teleporter is pretty much useless because you are so bound by distance. It gets ungodly expensive to use after a certain distance. In SMP with people spread all around, why punish us for being further away?

    3. Energy force fields? I never found a use for them so I never really used them.

So back to my point. We have all this eu production and nothing fun to do with it.

I would like to see a new tier of industrialcraft. Something that takes the same kind of goals that ic gives us. But make it use the massive eus we have created. We’re out growing the industrial age!

  39. AnnaMayBelle says:

Personally, while I play SMP mostly, my server is in Peaceful mode with no PVP… So to me, the direction I would most like to see IC2 travel in is the construction of more machinery. Increasing technology levels are really exciting to me, especially if the game is balanced in such a way that you have to slowly work your way up from the ‘industrial age’ to the ‘technological age’… IE, You can’t just skip to fusion generators and orbital cannons.

I will say that our most recent issue has been “Okay, now what?” Syndrome. So any additional toys to play with, regardless of the technological level, will be a godsend. ^^

    • Stuart says:

“So any additional toys to play with, regardless of the technological level, will be a godsend. ^^”

      <3 TOYS

  40. Drizak says:

WOW!! great ideas Al!! im sure the whole community will like these!

  41. TheBoozehammer says:

I think you should continue with the current path of IC2 and add weapons. Also like the idea of being able to disable them.

  42. Krugah says:

if you want to go more Economic/wartime, make resources gather into tighter pockets, and make those areas claimable and only allow that area to be taken by mutual war or through mutual trade.

  43. Silent_Samurai says:

The only thing I dislike are the constant Heyo’s ;(

  44. Malcolm says:

For me what i want the most in minecraft is more in the way of mechanics(ie. Pistons). If we could get working elevators/zeppelins or any thing in that line. Maybe ways to move miners about. Pistons have allowed rather incredible things to be made and i wish there were more things along that line to allow us to make even more amazing things.

  45. Tyson says:

Weapons doesn’t really interest me. I thinkt here are more than enough. If you want a projectile weapon maybe just modify the mining laser. I mean we alrady have the chainsaw, nano saber, and lots of explosives. Seems more than enough.

I’d like to see some balancing done. I hear solar panels are going to change soon but while I know there is a problem with the balance of the energy generators I don’t know if the solar panels are the main problem. I currently think water generators are just way too underpowered. Wind turbines look interesting but I’ve never actually gotten to where I can build them. And I don’t know anything about reactors. Haven’t gotten enough mats to play with one.

I guess the previous paragraph just says that energy producers need balancing and I don’t know if nerfing panels are going to do it.

Other than balancing I think the main thing I’d like is o add another tier or two to existing things. Maybe a super miner than is somewhere between a miner and a quarry. Better ability to transport energy. I think maybe something like a microwave dish that you build on top of your house and can beam/receive power to other dishes.

Oh, I think something like the alloy furnace from RP2 that makes advanced alloys to make the high tech items would be awesome. Of course the new furnace would require expensive things to make.

Anyways those are my two cents.

    • HAJ523 says:

I don’t know if i like the idea of having wireless power transmission as it will be extremely inefficient. i would like to see the higher level miner with the ability to handle energy crystals or better because shuffling batteries is just dumb for the amount of power that they use.

and yes i know that you could put down an MFE and a LV transformer however i dislike that those make the miner less portable and since it needs to move to be useful.

  46. 1234 says:

IC need more “tiers” and PVP content, and it shoud not be “balanced” in favor of noobs, if you know how to play – you own anyone who not.

Minecraft itself is laggy, but, on small servers (~15 online) everything just fine and PVP possible without any problems ever with projectile weapons.

Also as you possibly not know due googleban laser weapon is future tech, just like super ionistor energy storage (it is not possible to store energy without loses IRL, to charge accumulator you need 200-350% of energy, in IC due martian technology you store energy without any losses.)
Fusion reactor and ion cannot will fit without any problems.

Ore distribution shoud be changed in favor of PVP.
Some locations shoud contain much more ore – possibly hills and mountains this will be nice for PVP and resource wars.

Cost of machines shoud be rebalanced, currently you need 10 mins to create nuke and 30 mins to create reactor if know how everything works ever without cheats.

Also please rebalance ore distribution\cost, in 1.8.0 and future versions amount of iron is nearly trippled and random mineshafts allow you to farm stacks with no effort, possibly block of iron refine into single refined ingot, testrun game on IC server without any mods ended with everyone have nearly unlimited resources after ~3 hours. (also users got 150++ solars and quantum suits later)

  47. Makashi says:

No digs towards those who play SMP and PvP, but personally, i’m more on SSP person. More things to do and a reason to move around would be nice.
For example, the rubber trees force you to go searching(unless you get lucky with your spawn point) So maybe if you needed something to get to the second or third tier that you can’t get prior to that point?
Another example would be uranium, which you can find at most lvls, but you need Iron+ to mine it.
    Just my two cents

    Cheers, Makashi

  48. Chidwick089 says:

Well, Let me say something Al, I’ll be honest with you, this is my favorite mod of all time. I refuse to even boot my minecraft without it. About the whole newer tech thing, that sounds kind of awesome, but instead, maybe we could get a new ore, or a focus on the older machines a little bit, make them a little more interesting somehow. I’m just worried that IC risks becoming solely a tech tree climb to the highest point, that results in a unsatisfying feeling of no accomplishment, like when you reach the point in regular minecraft when there is nothing else to do. However, I love the idea of more tech to play around with! The only real issue i can ever see in IC is that later on, there is no danger. When you have legions of machines doing everything for you, there is no point to even leaving the house anymore, and it gives off a sense that makes me ask “Why am I doing this?”
To be honest, what I’m trying to say, is the player needs a new reason to explore. There needs to be a reward for all of the risk takers. The last time I ever left my house in IC was to gather rubber for my machines.

To sum it all up, Future Tech=HELLLLLL YEAH!
    Exploration Goals= Must Have

I appreciate you even reading this comment. It’s good to have a creator who listens to fans.

Oh yeah, and super secret project=Moon?

    • Remuthra says:

I agree, better reasons to explore is a must.

Random Idea though, what if there were some sort of progression of the dangers of Minecraft as well. Sort of like this: there’s an actual organization to your foes, so at the start you just have the usual mobs, but they advance in tech as you do, and by the time you have that automated factory complex you wanted, you’re being attacked by zombies and creepers with nanosuits, mining lasers, and jetpacks, and there are mob bases and factories dotting the land, creating the mobs and their equipment. Just some impossible IC idea I had that Alblaka can probably accomplish in all reality, given what we’ve seen from the modding community.

      • Bluehorazon says:

Well… I already damn the day some freaking zombie will blow up a nuke in my factory.

But i could think of stronger Nether-Mobs and maybe some IC-Materials which only exist in the Nether. Nether-Exploration with full Nano-Suits, a fancy Saber, some Mining-Lasers etc.

But someone already said… there need to be a better way of energy-transportation. Actually you just carry 3-4 Mining-Lasers etc. with you (changing Jetpacks in Midair isn’t recommended) to stay armed.

I would also wear a low-armor Energysuit which powers my Saber and Mining-Laser, so you can choose between a Low-Armor Energy-Storage, Medium-Armor from Diamonds or best protection with a Nanosuit.

I would also like a Low-Tech Milk-Helmet. How it works? Just milk some cows, put the milk in tin-can and store it in your inventory. If you wear the helmet it always uses one Milk-can to restore nutrition-points if they are lost.

You could also create a swim-suit which consumes bottles with air. IC just has limitless possibilities. Just take some of them and create whatever you want… i guess out there are tons of people who just like to play whatever IC would become.

      • Alblaka says:

        >.>
        <.<
I had an idea regarding a robot-colony gathering ores to reproduce and evolve. Kinda distant project though, would be quite hardcore to code.

        • Bluehorazon says:

Actually instead of ore-collecting robots i would like more ores. Tungsten, titanium or at least aluminium (because i dislike tin-cans) would be cool.

If i dick into the soil i like to come home with my bags full of cool ores. I don’t know if you could do biome-dependend ores/ressources. This would not really be like reality, but it reduces the problem of having limited space in your inventory for hundreds of precious things that awaits you underground.

Robot-Colonies would be nice, but i do not think IC needs them. Maybe you could find someone who wants to do this as a addition to IC (well or not even that, because vanilla has Ores too). If you give Ores a value you could use every ore (the robots could also easily adopt to other mods using new ores). If the collected value reaches a certain point the robots do funny things, like getting lasers, building a factory or whatever. But it is more like a mod itself, having it in IC seems strange, but it could of course be a mod, that requires IC, but could be installed independent.

          • HAJ523 says:

Tin cans are fine but i dislike the fact that they cannot be reused like buckets.

The reuse might be if it was previously used for uranium then it would have to be reused for the same purpose but if it was use for water it could be just a regular tin can used for anything.

          • Alblaka says:

Reuse = Impossible because they’re stackable. Period. Seriously period, to make an object reusable in crafting recipes, Minecraft even throws an error “maxStackSize must be 1”.

        • Ez says:

AI war :P. The higher tech you get the stronger and more aggressive the robots become. Could add some PvE much needed PvE challenge to the game.

          • Remuthra says:

Yeah that would be so epic >.<. I always felt it would be super cool to have some sort of ongoing war against an enemy force, would give you a reason to build clever defenses so your stuff isn't looted. In any case, Win! 😀

        • Chidwick089 says:

Al, I agree with all the nether mobs and stuff, maybe instead of a full fledged robot colony, we could get some sort of abandoned factory?
Another idea I had was maybe hirable worker, who would perform a set task for food, metal, shelter. Etc, etc.
However that sounds like a nightmare to code.
Provided you have the time, could I know if this is possible?
          I just got excited.

  49. Remuthra says:

Its so unfair, my keyboard cant make that smiley!

    😀

  50. HeadHunter67 says:

While I’m not “against” it per se, I don’t have much interest in “future tech” in IndustrialCraft. I’m content to stay mostly within the “modern” day. For instnace, there’s a mod that’s planning to add the Moon as an alternate “realm” for certain materials. If I want to play a space game, I don’t think Minecraft is it.

Industry is a cool progression for MC, as is technology… but when Minecraft stops being about mining and crafting, it’s not my cup of tea.

  51. b6665 says:

    Alblaka,
First off , Love your mod.
Second off , with my server experience with pvp it mostly shows that people walk hours away from spawn , get a secret base , and then try to find other people. The downside of this is that server pvp dies down quickly if let on it’s own. If possible, Could a special sort of structure that is placed by the world generator be made, That when fed with energy creates Resources? Possibly with an UI to say wich type of resource you want. This will create hot-spots for war. Especially if you make those structures limited to a distance from the spawn so that people can’t find one very very far away.

    Regards,

    B6665

    • Alblaka says:

Now, i could surely add a config tag to
-Make MassFabricators uncraftable without a special component (f.e. tilled field blocks) > Only OPs can craft them (directly spawning doesnt work)
      -Make MassFabs unremoveable and undestroyable
      -Make Massfabs unpipeable
-Reduce the energy ned for UUM.

Thus you could spawn some tilled field (taken because i don’t want to add a new item just for this, whereas a normall unobtainable thing is ned), crafta few mass fabs, place them wherever you like and voila there you go :3

      • Bluehorazon says:

I also like the idea of the industrial-ore-battle^^

You create an arena of indestructible baseblocks and spawn ores in it. Two times fight fore the ores armed with weapons ore mining-equipment (not both). On death you drop all collected ores. Maybe this doesn’t even needs to be really modded but in this case some weapons would be nice. The method with the mass-fab sounds also nice.

But still the question is if IC needs to force pvp. Actually there is only the armor and the saber in MC. There actually Mods which add weapons useable for pvp-warfare. IC really could use some PvE challange, but pvp? Industrial-ressource-battles may sound nice, but minecraft alone does not really feature team-battles, tactics or even nice combats. PvP always seems kind of flawed and i really do not know if IC is the right mod to fix this. IC already creates a good base of production to create weapons. If you would like to strengthen pvp it would be easy to create an alternative recipe for arrows or an “Arrow-magazine” because bows really suck, compared to melee-weapons cost-wise.

What IC could provide is the industrial ground to provide you with a full armory. But i don’t think that the mod should create the reasons for pvp. Servers are very individual in cases of pvp and the danger is, that an IC-Solution does not fit them all. It is good to give them ressources to fight with, and IC is good at doing this, but the reasons, they should figure out themselves.

Some weapons would round the mod up. An industrial worker would never should a zombie with a bow… of course he would use a pumpgun. (Note to army of darkness… you should call it boomstick and it should be made out of walnut-logs, cobalt-steel and a hair-trigger^^).

So something with a good fire-rate would be nice. But ammunition-handling is difficult… it should not be op, but you should be able to fire some bullets without wasting all your ressources.

Explosives are always nice, specially for sieges. The Dynamite rocks and maybe a grenade-launcher with similar ballistics but greater range is possible.

The danger in weapons is to overdo it. I do not know how damage could be scaled but fast-firing weapons would cut throw everything with ease. So even if weapons would be nice they should be able to penetrate quantum-armor without destroying pve completly.

So i would argue that IC does not lack strong weapons, but the quantum-suit is way too strong. Just make it a little bit cheaper, cut out the defense and make it more like a tool then an armor. But thats just maybe an easier approach to balance IC out a little bit, and i guess it is really hard to fullfill the needs of single- or multiplayer pve-players and pvp-players.

      • Wolfnacht says:

how would the mass fab create massive ore fields? Its a great idea but im missing a concept somewhere

        • Alblaka says:

The idea would be to make MassFab and undestroyable, unmoveable super-efficient energy-to-matter converter. You could just build your base on it, wire in energy and gain loads of UUM to craft any ore you need. Until somebody blows your butt (and your base) off it, to claim the MassFab for himself. etc

I fucking love every part of the mod, go on with what you suggested. It’ll be as awesome as the rest, for for sure.

I like the way IC2 changes things up. I like the way you are going. It adds a level of progression I like in my games. When I play with IC2, I’m given a sense of: Nomadic /BasicTech -> Medieval Tech -> Steampunk Tech -> Industrial Tech -> Advanced Tech

I’d like to see a Futuristic tech addition. Do you plan to do anything with the potion system or the enchantments? I’d love to see Science and Magic combine.

  54. Carl says:

I’d like to see a Tier 3 (or 4?) portable all-in-one machine that you can put down someplace, which immediately begins mining and processing at the highest tech level. Fuel it with a bunch of lapotron crystals or something, and perhaps it cannot be moved once placed. You can dismantle it and get a stack of stuff, but have to go back home to recharge parts and reassemble.

  55. Too-DAMN-Much says:

personally, go as futuristic as you want/can.

that’s literally the main thing drawing me to IC/IC2, it offsets the stone age type stuff that vanilla MC and a lot of other mods focus on very nicely, i get sick of fantasy genre games easier than most so advanced technology in MC is a very nice thing to have when i get sick of flowering picking elves and dwarves.

and ORBITAL LASAR? hell yes, seriously do want! like i said, the more futuristic the better, even stuff like programmable AI drones to do mundane tasks automatically would be an extremely welcome addition.

IC/IC2 have been and probably always will be my single favorite MC mod around, if i had to give any criticism at all it’d be that it’s just about impossible to remember the thousands of crafting recipes, but that’s not so big a deal.

  56. Wolfnacht says:

It all sounds like a good idea to me, however I do think it would be a good idea to maybe, add a setting in the config files to disable all/some weapons as some servers may not utilize the weapons as a PvP server would… another thing id like to add would be maybe a brass(smeltable metal) and/or brass casings(utilizing brass bars) Just an idea…

a second thing i do wish to reccomend would be a gunpowder recipie because killing creepers is 1) a PITA (not the animal group) 2) very destructive and im sure many will agree. the overall idea would be to add sulfur deposits and/or streams (im sure deposits would be easier) combine with coal dust to create gunpowder. and possibly come up with a ratio equation for owners to control the ability to create gunpowder (or find sulfer)

and as many said before it would be neat to see more of an evolution to go on with teirs added modern machinery as well as advanced and futuristic… Aslo I the Illuminators would be a fantastic add 🙂 i hate running out of torches but having enough wire to run 4k blocks and still have a decent power threshold.

    • Alblaka says:

      1. Ofc, any sort of PvP mod of that size would essentially require configurable settings.
      2. I currently tinker with the idea of making the weapons an addon to IC(seperate jar to install), thus servers could just not install the file and there woulnt be weapons.
      3. If i come to implement the agriculture concept, there will be gunpowder plants.

      • wolfnacht44 says:

Hmm Didn’t realize there was a Gunpowder plant… however I only knew the more elemental/chemical side… I won’t go into details but yeah… I considered poking you about making a seperate jar, but that may complicate installation for some of our less competent( i think thats the right word im lookin for) users…
and I do like to idea of an agriculture set up..
I’m Really looking forward to the next release I kept a backup of my MC just for this lol

  57. Cadde says:

Well, kinda late to the party i think but…

To me, IC (and that goes for MC in general) is all about mining, processing, refining and doing that all over again building ever more complex factories etc etc. With a sprinkle of building the actual structures for said factories.

And i mostly do this in SSP on hard difficulty to give me something to do besides breaking stone blocks to find some ore. Additionally i have restarted work on my old OreVeins mod to make resources spawn in long veins rather than everywhere in tiny pockets. I would do it in SMP if i had more friends who first and foremost played MC and secondly had the same interests (building factories etc) as me. Which i don’t…

So what am i looking forwards to in IC2? Well…

    * More ores / differing qualities of ores to give me more stuff to process.
    * More processing steps. (Macerate ore blocks to get 1/2 cobble and 1 – 4 dust heaps that you need to melt down in a furnace and pour into a mold to create different shapes of metal for different applications)
    * More end game items (Nuclear reactors are all well and good but like you said, weapons are cool too and maybe tunnel boring machines, Quarries etc… Yes, i know BC does this already but i like your way of doing things)
    * Different kinds of power sources. Steam, petrolium, mechanical, electric etc etc.
    * In general more industry related stuff like transporting stuff between machines. (Once again, BC does this but i like your implementations more)
    * Oh and i would love to see some chemistry implemented. Like the full process to make nitroglycerin (to make TNT) including gathering the base elements needed from your mines and all that.
    * And finally, some logic (get rid of redstone and instead use your electric energy) to control machines with.

And everything should have some practical application. So say we go from fighting with sticks and clubs to swords and axes to guns and bombs… Let’s make it so you have recipes for said weapons and you have to use machines to produce the parts of said weapons through the use of a template recipe.
So i want to make a sword, i get some iron ore, crush it in a macerator, melt the ore heaps into a liquid, pour the hot liquid into a mold (a block) with a template for a blade and also pour some molten iron into another mold for the handle. To make the sword complete you then take the handle and blade to a crafting table and combine the two to make the sword.
Follow the same process for an M16 but of course require more parts and more elaborate steps. As well as a cartridge making machine and pouring led into a mold to make the bullets. Combine coal dust and sulfur to get the black powder and to finalize the whole process you assemble each round in a crafting table. (Which too could be automated, once again BC does this but… Yeah, love your stuff!)

End game? Machine guns? Tanks? Jets? Nuclear war?

So this all works great in SMP on PvP servers, what about those who don’t do PvP or play SSP? (This could also be cool for PvP servers btw)
Introduce bandits! Bandits will gradually evolve (from sticks, clubs and stones to sending artillery shells and bomb planes on your precious factories)
    The way they work is:

The more value your structures hold… The more difficult the bandits will become!
If your operation consists of a stone furnace where you burn pigs to make food then your enemy will use sticks and stones to attack you.
Or if your operation consists of a few nuclear reactors, a bunch of weapons factories and so on then they too will bring guns and tesla coils to your base to kill you off.
In short then, bandits will be in a never ending arms race with you until both of you finish eachother off with a nuclear holocaust!

If you manage to keep the bandits at bay by eliminating the source of their power, that is a bandits nest that spawns somewhere close to your base of operations then it won’t come to total nuclear annihilation though.
Killing the bandits nest means it will have to respawn somwhere else (with some time between spawns, maybe 20 minutes or so?) and restart the arms race process.
What i mean is a freshly spawn bandits nest will not bring nukes to your home right away, it will slowly upgrade itself to match your power levels.

Eh, so i could go on… Needless to say, i just want MORE! MOOOORE!
And that is sort of what i would have done if i had your experience in modding.
Though i would probably instead opt to create a new game alltogether in C++… Which i would love to see you do as well!

A cool mod call Better Ore Distribution removes normal generation and adds ore “mines”, larges 2-4 chunk areas with a high concentration of their specific ore. It could be very cool paired with these weapons. The ore is spread out enough to facilitate taking more than one trip, and you would need to find and control these mines to get resources for large industrialization. A small amount of normal ore spawns, but not much.

    • Cadde says:

The problem with BOD (Better Ore Dist) is that uranium ores spawn in super large quantities no matter how you set it up in the configs… Unless there’s a new release of BOD that fixes that.

Either way, i have resurrected my old project OreVeins but I’m not going to release it until i feel i have hit the right balance (which means a lot of play testing is being done)

  59. Neceros says:

I really, really like the high tech stuff, too. I would love you if you redesigned things to be slightly more minecraftian (More obvious tiers), but I love that we can go high in technology.

Keep adding more layers. People will use it if they like it.

  60. mithos says:

A little late, but I’ll add my comment anyway.

I love IC because it actually adds much to the game with the machines and energy.
To me, it’s nearly complete for the existing tiers, but I found two ways to make it better:

The first one is to add more advanced stuff, like tiers 3 and 4, that would require specific stuff produced by machines of lower tiers.
As a followup, you could think of an other dimension to create, like space or something like this, to add even more things to do, but that is up to you.

The second one is something that would start a flamewar…
I mean, wouldn’t it be great if IC, buildcraft and RedPower were compatible?
I know they can work together because I use all of them, but you still need other mods to convert energy for example.
Also, RedPower uses something that, in my opinion, IC could benefit greatly, namely the covers system.
As stated in the dev blog, it would be possible to code blocks to use it by using the core mod, so you could hide away all the cables without having walls/wires/walls.

I know it’s only wishfull thinking, but your three mods really integrates well with each other, and it’s a waste that some of the best ideas out there can’t be shared.

Anyway, for the weapons part, I’m not really interested in this unless it can become some kind of automated defenses for EACH tiers (starting with real canons in low tech, and moving on to automatic aiming systems later on for example).

But whatever you do, just remember to keep IC being a technological mod, and everyone will be pleased, because that is what drew us to use and love it.

  61. Eculc says:

you had me at “orbital cannon” =P

  62. Xavi96 says:

al, can you please add all of what you said… you built this mod out of your own ideas and everyone likes it, why not adding more of your own ideas?
    love this mod
    thanks =D
